Summary: While Sorcerer’s Stone presented us with a Snape who was thoroughly unpleasant, at least in Harry’s eyes, it also gave us a Severus who was more hero than rogue. In ‘Chamber of Secrets’ we get less direct conflict between Harry and Snape, but there are a few scenes that shed light on Snape’s interactions with the other faculty members. And a duel. Must not forget the duel! Read on, as my search for canon Snape continues.

Summary: Continuing with the effort to identify ‘canon Snape’, here are the Snape relevant passages from “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”. Of the first 5 books, this one had the least amount of information on Snape. However, there are some interesting scenes that give us insight into the character. Specific instances include the duel against Lockhart and the scene involving the full faculty at the end of the book, as well as numerous instances that reinforce the idea that Snape has a grudge against Harry.
Read more...Summary: JKR has created a big, sprawling, detailed world and populated it with numerous interesting characters. One character in particular caught my eye (and my interest)- potions master Severus Snape. Fanon characterizations of Snape vary widely. He is portrayed as hero, devil, vampire, woobie. In the hands of a good writer, almost any of these will actually work for me! However, it’s always nice to have canon to go back to. Based on canon, we don’t actually KNOW that much about Snape. In an attempt to key in on what we do know, I’ve gone through the books and pulled out all of the ‘Snape relevant’ passages as a way of providing a quick resource. I find them helpful when I want to touch base with canon and I’m throwing them up on the web in case others find them helpful as well. Thus, here we go with the first ‘Snape resource’- Snape quotes in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”.
