I like dark AU’s in which the slayer never came and/or vampire’s have taken over. This is an excellent example, told from Oz’s POV, and focusing on the adventures of Giles and his sad band of AU Scoobies. When Oz hits Sunnydale with his friend Dex, he runs into more trouble than he can handle. Enter a jaded ex-Watcher with no one to watch. I liked this story for its dark, melancholy feel and strong characterizations of Giles and Oz. I can really see this version of Giles developing in a world where his Slayer never came. Heavy on plot and action and characterization, the slashy bits come in at the end and fit quite nicely with the overall mood of desperation and doom.
Oh, this is very, very good. It’s set post-s5, and Giles has returned to London in the wake of Buffy’s death. Who should show up looking for him but Oz, who is fleeing from his inner-wolf. What follows is a nice, long story with plenty of plot and excellent characterizations of Oz and Giles. As we see through Oz’s eyes, Buffy’s death, and Gile’s actions during the Glory arc, have taken something important from the ex-Watcher. Oz too, is damaged. It’s nicely angsty, has some excellent undercurrents (fueled by the presence of Ethan) and is laid out against the background of a very interesting plot concerning a dead child and a haunted mansion. I particularly liked how the threads/themes expressed in the exorcism plot were also present in the larger story of Giles and Oz. Good storytelling, great characterizations and a very smooth writing style. Highly rec’ed.
