OK, this story, which focuses on Buffy and Giles, is the main reason I decided to include a seperate ‘Buffy’ section for fanfic. It’s an absolute favorite of mine. And I can’t find a working link. How irritating is that? Fortunately, the ‘Way Back’ machine had a cached copy, so I present you with a link anyway. Yes, the story was worth tracking down. The story is not tremendously long, and it involves an alternate universe where things went very differently between ‘Ripper’ the Watcher and his slayer. When these two worlds collide, ‘real’ Buffy and ‘real’ Giles face some realities that maybe they didn’t want to. Brilliant storytelling. (If someone knows working contact info on the author please pass it along so I can ask whether she wants it up. It looks like the virginia.edu site/email is no good.)

This mid-sized read is the very definition of ‘style’- where how the story is told is more important than what story is told. Don’t get me wrong, there’s no florid writing or spewing of adjectives. No, this is a sparse story, told with a bleakness and detachment that is stifling in its intensity. It’s a post-s7 story, a mid-sized read that focuses on Giles and his attempts to make a life after Sunnydale has fallen and the world has been saved. He’s back in England and slowly but surely learning how to be ‘normal’- or as normal as it will ever be possible for him to be. Part of this ‘normal’, and the focus of the first part of the story, is his growing relationship with a woman who is never named (a nice touch). However ‘normal’, even Giles’ brand of normal, is not a constant state. When the Slayer shows up at his door, you know the apocalypse will soon follow.

He leaves Buffy outside with her sword on the grass and her face-guard in her hands. He finds his lover in their study. When he sets a chair next to hers, her hands still on the keys of her laptop. He studies her knees and when she looks at him, puzzled, he sees the life he was never supposed to have.

Haunting story, highly rec’ed.
