Men of Our Word

L.M. Griffin
Pirates of the Carib. Gen [Added: 04/22/04 | Norrington Jack]

This is a very fun read, set during Will and Elizabeth’s engagement party.  The focus character is (of course) Norrington, who accepted Elizabeth’s invitation despite the fact he still has feelings for her.  However, the Commodore is a man of honor, and he wishes to make peace with Will and make it clear to any gossips that he supports the coming union.  Fortunately for the story, and for the good Commodore, an unexpected guest shows up.  Really- what were Elizabeth and Will thinking, sending an invite to a pirate?!  Hee!

I enjoyed the characterizations of all concerned, though Norrington in particular shines.  The style of the writing is also a bit unique- very nice use of first person POV.  Norrington’s somewhat self-deprecating wit makes a fine foundation for the storytelling.  It also does an excellent job of mixing the surreal with the mundane- rather like the movie itself.  The image of Norrington forced to hide from a bunch of man-hunting women cracked me up.  And Jack and the pants....  Yes, this is a fine example of my favorite type of PotC story- witty, sharp dialogue, sympathetic/intelligent/fun characterizations and plenty of humor hiding unseen depths.  Note- I’d really classify it as ‘pre-slash’, but I suppose that really depends on one’s point of view.
