This is a long, nifty, action-adventure story that’s accessible to both fans and those who have never seen the show. Blake and the crew of the Liberator are on a mission to an outlying planet. While the natives seem friendly enough, and more than willing to help in the efforts against the Federation, the more suspicious members of the crew (aka Avon) are, well, suspicious. To complicate matters, the settlers warn the crew not to venture beyond the safety of the compound, for ‘Haunts’ stalk the desert and few who enter return alive. Think the stage is set for trouble? You’d be right!
This is a great ‘case file’ story, and I was immediately intrigued by the mystery of the ‘haunts’. The Federation backstory also worked to add to the sense of urgency and suspense. Finally, I really enjoyed the characterizations. Avon is my fav, and I loved the depiction of him- suspicious, rational, with a finely developed sense of self-preservation and a deeply buried sense of loyalty. Vila, who I’ve never much cared about, also came across well. Lastly, though we don’t get much Blake/Avon interaction, I liked the contrasting ways in which they were depicted. A fine read, highly recommended for anyone who’s curious about the B7 universe- or just looking for a good fic!
