Someone recommended this story to me after I made a joke about not being able to stomach the idea of Ian playing with ‘fluffy bunny toys’ as a child. Well, get ready for fluffy bunnies, chopped up brains, and an intense and angsty look into what made Ian the man he is today. This is the first in a series that examines Ian’s childhood. Each book in the series is wonderful, but I believe this to be the best. In this tale, Ian wants a soul. Irons has informed him he doesn’t have one, and if Irons says it is true, then it must be so. What follows explores Ian’s genetic make-up, the issue of clones, the fact that Ian was not the first Ian and perhaps will not be the last.
As with the series as a whole, the characterizations are brilliant, and the moody and evocative writing put you ‘inside’ young Ian’s head. As for Irons, he is not drawn as a cartoon villain, but rather a complex and powerful man who does what he must to win the ultimate game. It’s all completely in-character yet startlingly original and it’s told with a biting humor that fits the dark tone of the story. I cannot recommend this story highly enough. Even for those who have no knowledge of canon, this fanfic can stand on its own.
