This vid is very much the funny!! It’s all about poor doomed Lex and whether or not he can resist his destiny and avoid becoming EVIL, EVIL, EVIL! Too bad, so sad, probably not. Hee. Some of the vid only works if you understand the context, so for non-fans it’s a bit of a 2 note joke. But the 2 notes are VERY funny and very clever! Well worth the download for the Smallville fans, still worth a look if you don’t know the show!
Visceral response: Damn, this tune is very familiar. I like the timing on that beginning bit- how Lex kind of turns and sighs fits the song and then cut to Cassandra on the vocals ‘some people say’- and oh SHIT- that’s from South Park. Too fucking funny. Yep, this song was a great choice. Um, back to the vid- that whole first sequence cutting to people saying Lex is ‘a bad guy’ works nicely. “I just fuck up” sequence works well too. Hm- some of this really requires the viewer to know the context of the shots- which is fun, but only if you do know the context. But I do, so it’s cool. I like the clip choice on ‘It’s not my fault if I’m so evil’- and Lionel part is great when the lyrics are about ‘my parents’. OH SHIT- the Jonathan lip synch is brilliant and actually matches up to the lyrics (and I love that Jon is playing Satan’s role- snerk). The ‘just watch me change’ stuff is really context dependent- might have been fun to dig up some scenes of Lex with puppies and flowers- something more visual (and smarmy). Did like the handshake with Jon at the end- less so on the Clex at the Talon at the very end.
Whew! This vid is a lot of fun and I very much enjoyed having to root through my memories to recall the context of many of the clip choices. I do think this limits the appeal of the vid to Smallville fans, because if you don’t know the context, you won’t totally see how Lex was evil and you especially won’t understand his attempts to change. I think the vid would have been funnier if they’d actually gone with more literal/visual clip choices, particularly at the end when Lex is ‘changing’. The whole scene with Lana at the Talon only works if you realize Lex is agreeing to buy it for her. Ditto the scene of Lex giving John and Martha the deed to the farm. Upping the cheese factor by having shots like Lex bringing Cassandra flowers, or standing in front of a cheering crowd, or maybe have Jon look at the deed but flash to a cheesy Valentine or ‘friendship’ card or something- anyway, some more literal and visual cues of Lex being good, might have broadened the audience for this one. Still, as a Smallville fan, it’s tremendous fun. For non-fans, the song choice and the Jon lip synching section might still make it worth a look.
