This is my favorite Buffy vid, and probably always will be. It’s an exploration of season 7 Spike, and while it doesn’t exactly follow the show’s chronology, it feels like it does. I love it for the song choice, the clip choice, the very subtle effects that tie song to lyrics and an overall sense of mood and theme that just perfectly matches the way I see this character and his journey. This is a subtle gut punch of a story, and I never get tired of trying to work out all of the nuances that make this vid work so very well for me. (Note- this vid works great as a sequal to ‘Mad World’, so you might want to check that one out first.)
Visceral reaction: This vid wrecks me. From the very first second when the piano kicks in and we see Spike on his knees, light pouring out of him, each still shot pulsing in time to the chords, all the way through to the end, and ‘Honey if I’m honest, I still don’t know what love is,’ echoing as he burns out- it all just fucking wrecks me. I can’t watch it and type this, the damn vid makes me incoherent. For me, this is THE Buffy vid, and most definitely THE Spike vid. It is the perfect ending to his story, in all its sadness and all its twisted version of glory. The ending of this vid satisfies me in a way the show didn’t quite do- despite the fact the vid is pretty much a recounting of the season (at least with regard to Spike) and the fact I did LIKE the show’s ending. The vid, it was just more powerful, more focused, than the show. It works for me in every possible way.
I hate being inarticulate when it comes to a vid I adore, so I’ll hit some of the elements that make this video stand out for me. I am a movement whore- I love the use of movement to convey mood, to push the story along, or simply to add visual interest. What I love here is how the LACK of movement ends up emphasizing movement. The stills fade in and out of black, making them seem to ‘pulse’ along with the piano- and then when the clips DO involve movement, even slight movements are emphasized because they’re viewed in comparison to the stills. I love how Luminosity kicks off immediately with the use of stills- getting the viewer in that ‘head space’, and then building complexity. One of my favorite series of shots is around 36 seconds in- where she cuts between Buffy’s face and a slow zoom in on Spike holding Buffy in bed. It’s just massively striking. I also like that the effect is used sparingly- mostly where there is just the crashing piano notes- too much would have been too much, but the use here just makes a beautiful counterpoint.
The song also slays me- I went and downloaded every song by this artist after hearing it. Oddly, none of them struck me like this song did. It leaves me wondering if part of why I love this song so much is because it was paired with this vid. Entirely possible. I find that many of Luminosity’s vids seem to transcend their source material. Anyway, the lyrics just fit my view of Spike and I’m completely impressed with how the vid FEELS like a linear telling of s7 Spike- but it really isn’t, or at least, the clips aren’t in chronological order. I don’t know- I give up. I don’t get how she pulls all of this together in the way she does and makes it work so very perfectly for me. This is a vid I’ll be dissecting for years. Fortunately, I’m happy to do so.
