This Giles focused vid just gets me in the heart. I enjoy it for its characterization of Giles and its cute premise. You know, Giles really did end up listening to everyone else’s problems, and you can’t blame the guy for wanting to get a little ‘me’ time for himself. The quirky, literal interpretation of many of the lyrics is fun, the kids’ reactions to Gile’s request cracked me up, and solid editing pulls it together in a satisfying manner. Not a perfect vid and not a technological wonder, but a hell of a lot of fun and a must see vid for Giles fans!
**Note- the link is currently pulling a 404. If anyone knows where this vidder has moved, drop me a comment. If I can’t dig up a working link soon, I’ll pull the rec so as not to torture folks with the unattainable.
Visceral reaction: Giles focused. Hee. Cute idea. Have I mentioned I love Giles? Talky face doesn’t bother me, even though there’s a lot of it. Not sure why. Maybe cause the vid’s all about ‘talking’? Clever and I like the reaction shots to Gile’s request. Yea- I think I got to rec this one.
My, that was a rather short ‘reaction’. I’ll detail it out with another viewing.... Cute idea- starting with the credits of AST. Nifty! The literal interpretation of the lyrics is working really well for me- I think because the vid comes across a little tongue-in-cheek, kinda self-aware of its cheese factor. And some of lyric/clip pairings- ‘talk about your clothes’ to ghost Willow; ‘moisturizer’ one- comedy freak’n gold!!! Also, dig the quick cuts to the ‘you, you, yous’ in both spots it’s used. I also enjoy the kids’ reactions to Gile’s request to talk about him (when they’re sitting in the Bronze and kind of rolling their eyes). I also like the ending shot of Giles laughing- it fits the good-hearted nature of this vid. Now, this vid’s not perfect- the variation in the quality of source is sometimes distracting, I spotted a few stray frames, I’m not so sure about all of the clip choices (largely in spots where it’s going on about what the narrator wants to talk about ‘what I see’ etc. Cutting the run time down on the song might have helped make this a tighter vid.) and I think as a whole it could use some polish. But damn- this vid just makes me really HAPPY- it resonates, it’s fun, it’s clever. Definite rec for any Giles fan.
So, looking back over this vid yet again, why does it hold such strong appeal to me? Um, I love Giles? Okay.... So why doesn’t the talky face drive me apeshit the way it normally does? This is the second vid by this vidder that I’ve rec’ed and BOTH have ‘talky face’ way past my normal tolerance levels. Neither vid is a technical marvel of motion and effect, and that’s where my tastes tend to lie. What both of these vids do have going for them are cute ideas and characterizations of Giles that I simply adore! I think I sometimes forget the importance of characterization in vids- because at face value, how can you ‘write’ a character ‘out of character’ when you’re vidding? I mean, that should be impossible. But characterization does matter, and vidders choose what to emphasize through their choice of song and clip and pacing and even effects. This vid, and Xandra’s other Giles vid that I rec- they have good hearts and a portrayal of Giles that really resonates with me. These are fan vids- by fans, for fans- so ultimately, characterization is what it’s all about. And that’s as it should be!
