This is the funniest vid I’ve ever seen! The basic premise? Angel is gay. Very, very gay! The song is hilarious, and provides a brilliant framework for the video. However, the vid goes beyond simply matching clips to words and it tells a bunch of ‘mini-stories’, each set to the different stanzas of the song. It’s a series of scenes from a day in Angel’s very gay life and it just works SO brilliantly. I can watch this video over and over again and keep spotting new things. And may I just say- DAMN that show is gay! I mean, when they have guys dancing around in flames with fire hydrants erupting in giant geysers of fluid.... Sweet lord- this is just so funny!
Visceral response: Agh! Two seconds in and I’ve already peed my pants. (Hm- probably falls into the category of ‘too much information’.) Anyway- I really do adore how it starts on Angel making that exasperated face that so perfectly fits the ‘Whatever’ lyric. And honestly, I will never get tired of seeing those scenes of Angel dancing- and they fit the beat nicely here. And then, on to the storytelling! ‘Never called him back’ and the note on the car- HA! Geesh, Angel really does look like he’s saying ‘Whatever’ a lot! It’s like his theme or something. The whole ‘Gay-mart USA’ set works perfectly. It’s scary how well it all works- particularly the ‘calves’ section- and then with the Angel rapid blinking- I’m just dying here! Ha- club scene- ‘no cute guys’! Hm- I don’t quite get the car bit with the guy on his knees- not sure what the clip means. OMG! Lila trying to drop to her knees ‘Hey, pumpkin’. How perfectly did that work! Yes, she is a perv. Why is Angel’s motorcycle helmet pink. Is he gay in canon? Seriously- I wouldn’t own a pink helmet and I’m a woman! Hee- the train!!! And Wes, looking down like Angel’s, well, going down. Um- Wes looks good in leather. Uncomfortable, but that’s good too! Ah- the mumbling on the tootsie pop section- and how Angel licked his lips!!! HEE! Oh, man- the ‘Bradley’ section with Spike works perfectly. Lip synch is scarily dead on. And the thought of Angel and Spike getting it on gives me a happy. And can I say, this show seems really into bondage! Gay bondage. HEE!
Honestly, this vid just impresses the hell out of me. Some of the comedy vids, some of which I LIKE, are very ‘1 note’. There’s a song that works well, a cute idea, and then it’s matched up to clips that fit. And that- that can be very funny. For one or two viewings. And then the joke’s over. What makes this vid work so well for me is: great song, great clips that illustrate the song; but then it goes beyond and really makes the sequences fit together as a whole. It’s not like one clip is matched to a lyric, then another clip is matched to a lyric, and etc.... Each of the stanzas in the song holds together for me as a distinct little story, and then all of them pull together nicely to represent ‘a day in the life’. This vid also adds in tons of extra little comic scenes- like the geyser going off, or the train in the tunnel. It’s really a very layered vid and technically impressive in a subtle way. Though really, the word subtle seems so very wrong to use in terms of this vid!!! Damn, that was good stuff!
